Here are the top five stories today in Concord:

  1. According to a press release from Attorney General Rob Bonta, 29 individuals associated with criminal street gangs known as the Bully Boys and the CoCo Boys have been sentenced for a $1 million fraud scheme. “The gangs and their associates were alleged to have conspired to defraud victims throughout California by hacking the credit card terminals and merchant accounts of dozens of medical and dental businesses. The defendants pled guilty to charges ranging from grand theft, conspiracy and burglary. The leader of the scheme, Toni Coffman, received a prison sentence of 13 years and 8 months and was ordered to pay $861,000 in restitution. The defendants will serve a combined prison sentence of approximately 86 years.” The schemes were tied to the two criminal street gangs in the Antioch, Pittsburg and Bay Point areas. 2. A major injury vehicle collision closed Clayton Road at Ayers in Concord on Saturday morning. It was a two vehicle collision and both drivers were initially trapped in their vehicles. Both were transported to the hospital. The extent of their injuries was not known at the time of this writing. (Claycord.com)
  3. Five days of jazz? Sign me up! That’s just what you’ll get when the Concord Jazz Festival kicks off on August 3. Dubbed “Take Five” in honor of Concord native Dave Brubeck, the annual event has become a must-attend for locals and jazz enthusiasts from all over. Check out the schedule at this link. See you there! (Pioneer Publishers)
  4. Another armed watch robbery was perpetrated on Friday, this time in downtown Walnut Creek. The thieves made off with the victims watch and other undisclosed items, escaping in a Mercedes sedan. Watch your watches, Concord! (News 24/680)
  5. Happy 25th anniversary Moraga-Orinda Fire District! The Moraga Town Council honored the MOFD with a proclamation at its meeting on June 22. According to this Lamorinda Weekly article “before an official fire department was formed in 1923, any fires that occurred… were extinguished by neighbors, farmhands and cowboys in the area.” Since we have a lot fewer cowboys these days, I’m sure glad we have our firefighters! Congrats for a fantastic 25 years MOFD! (lamorindaweekly.com)
