Here are the top five stories today in Oceanside-Camp Pendleton:

  1. Two people were killed in a single-car crash Friday evening in Oceanside, police said.
    The crash was reported at around 5 p.m. along College Boulevard, according to Oceanside Police Department spokesperson Jennifer Atenza. Northbound College Boulevard is closed between Old Grove Road and Mesa Drive. (NBC San Diego)
  2. A pedestrian was fatally struck by a train Friday in Carlsbad. An Amtrak train hit a man around 9:15 a.m. just north of the Carlsbad Village Station in the 2700 block of State Street, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department. The victim, whose identity was not immediately available, died at the scene. “Deputies are investigating the incident,” sheriff’s Deputy Christopher Campbell said. “The manner of death will be determined by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.” (Carlsbad Patch)
  3. A previously convicted drunken driver who was under the influence when he struck and killed a 22-year-old active-duty Camp Pendleton Marine was sentenced Thursday to 15 years to life in state prison. William Edward Vaden, 33, pleaded guilty last month to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in connection with the death of Juan Muniz III, who was struck while crossing an Oceanside street during the early morning hours of Jan. 26, 2020.   4. Cynthia’s Artistic Expressions, a veteran-owned art gallery and sip and paint studio will be celebrating Black History Month with a “Black Love Matters” Art Exhibition. They will be featuring artwork from Navy Veterans W.B. and Artist Mike along with art from active duty Marine Linda Aviles. They are highlighting the extraordinary artistic talents from local artists of color within our military and veteran community. This event is Saturday February 19th from 4-8 pm and is open and free to the public. (osidenews.com)
  5. Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa was recently named the top resort in California and one of the three best resorts in the U.S. in the latest rankings by U.S. News & World Report. The resort, which is described as having a Mediterranean ambiance with hacienda-style architecture, was also named the best hotel in California and one of the four best hotels in the U.S. “U.S. News analyzed more than 35,000 hotels to find the best in the USA, Europe, Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean, based on reputation among travel experts, guest reviews and hotel class ratings,” according to a statement on their website.
