It was a mixed bag for some of the world’s best in the first round of the 104th PGA Championship at Southern Hills. Two-time PGA Championship winner Rory McIlroy catapulted himself to the top of the leaderboard with an opening 5-under 65, but not all were as lucky as the Northern Irishman.
Four of the top five players in the world put together over-par rounds; included among those was the best player in the game this year, Scottie Scheffler, who signed a 1-over 71 to sit six off the pace. He is off Friday morning alongside Collin Morikawa and Jon Rahm, both of whom struggled as well over their first 18 holes.
While the trio were unable to handle the difficult afternoon conditions at Southern Hills, Justin Thomas maintained. The world No. 9 began his week with a 3-under 67, the best opening round of his PGA Championship career. He has also gotten off to a hot start in Round 2. McIlroy, Thomas and others will look to separate themselves from the pack while names like Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth will attempt to make the cut.
