Adena Mansion hosting crafting event
CHILLICOTHE— Creative Chaos and Adena Mansion and Gardens partner up
to host a crafting crop at Adena Mansion and Gardens Visitor Center from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on April 2.
Each crafter will receive a welcome gift and will have the opportunity to create a
crafty fun make-and-take with Creative Chaos. If you would like to shop, Creative
Chaos will have shopping available for all crafters. There will also be door prizes given
throughout the day. Lunch, dinner and snacks are provided.
The cost for each crafter is $60. Reservations and advance payment is required, and
may be made online or you may call 740-772-1500 and make your reservation, then
mail your payment to Adena Mansion and Gardens, 847 Adena Road, Chillicothe, OH
45601.
All proceeds from the crop go to Adena Mansion and Gardens educational programming.
FBP Celebrates Engineering Week and Diversity
PIKETON —This week, Fluor-BWXT (FBP) celebrates Engineers Week. As a large employer in southern Ohio requiring expertise from diverse engineering careers, FBP is proud to have employees who are dedicated to mentoring others. Today, February 24, is “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day (Girl Day).”
Although there are approximately 192,000 engineers in the U.S., only about 15% of them are women. Ellen Stone is one of Fluor-BWXT’s civil engineers. As a mom of three girls, Stone has more than just one reason to be a mentor.
“With engineering, the possibilities are endless,” Stone said. “There’s a lot of math, science and problem-solving. You’re always trying to help people and the people you work with and help become like your family.”
Her interest in engineering was sparked during a junior high field trip to Ohio University that featured women of science. When she started working at the site in 2007 with her mentor, Roger Steckel, she felt ready to take on the world. Her first big assignment involved figuring out how to remedy a fallen pipeline on Fog Road. Stone recalls traversing through a jungle-like overgrowth and climbing a hill to the end of the pipeline for a closer look.
“We discovered that a wooden support on one end of the pipeline had rotted, causing it to fall down. The pipe was replaced with an underground high density poly ethylene (HDPE) line.”
Since then, Stone has become an ambassador for the engineering profession, sharing her experiences during STEAM Ahead presentations, career day, and tours. STEAM Ahead is an interactive program that exposes students to careers in science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM). Stone has also worked with several co-op students and summer interns to promote engineering. Since 2012, FBP’s engineering group has hired 33 interns, 23% of whom were female.
What is her best advice to future engineers?
“Research the opportunities, visit companies and talk to a variety of engineers to decide which field is right for you.”
Engineers Week was founded by the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) in 1951. March 4 is World Engineering Day. According to NSPE, nearly 70% of girls are inspired to pursue engineering careers by Girl Day mentors.
