Ann Arbor school receives $5,000 literacy grant for classroom libraries

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – A school on Tree Town’s south side has received $5,000 to buy books for elementary classroom libraries.

Central Academy, at 2455 S. Industrial Hwy, is one of 16 schools in the United States to be awarded a 2022 grant from the Snapdragon Book Foundation.

“Central Academy’s mission is the promotion of appreciation of culture and our school strives every day to fulfill that promise to our students. We appreciate the potential to implement further programs now made possible by this grant,” said Central Academy K-5 principal Nahla Attar in a release.

Almost 700 schools across the country submitted grant proposals. Winning schools received grants ranging from $300 to $20,000, according to the Snapdragon Book Foundation website.

Money from the literacy grant will be used to add hundreds of books to kindergarten through fifth grade classrooms over the summer.

“We have a very diverse student population at Central,” said Central Academy K-5 Reading Specialist C.J. Snow. “It is very important for students to ‘see themselves’ in the literature they read. When we wrote the grant, we did so with the focus being books that will reflect our diversity, both in characters and authorship.”

Only one other Michigan school, Distinctive College Prep in Redford, was selected for one of the other grants.
