Athens mystery writer Betty Jean Craige recently had a novel and a book on her pet parrot recognized by The Independent Press.
“Death in Potter’s Woods” was cited as a 2022 Distinguished Favorite in the mystery category, while “Ruminations of a Parrot Named Cosmo” received the same recognition in the animal category.
The national competition is judged by experts working in the book industry including publishers, editors and copywriters.
“Death in Potter’s Woods” is the fifth book in Craige’s Witherston Murder Mystery series and revolves around a letter to the editor demanding 3,000 citizens to contribute $5,000 each or the mayor of the city will die.
The other book is a compilation of 75 essays on her pet African Grey parrot, Cosmo, and animal behavior in general. Many of the columns were originally printed in the Athens Banner-Herald.
Craige is a professor emerita of comparative literature at the University of Georgia, having retired in 2011. She grew up in El Paso, Texas, and received her bachelor’s degree at Pomona College in California.
