Escanaba’s Isy Braun returns the ball against Marquete Tuesday in Marquette.

ESCANABA — The Escanaba girls tennis team split with Marquette Tuesday in Escanaba.

Aside from the final score, the Eskymos and Redettes split both singles and doubles, with Esky earning the win at No. 1 and 2 singles and doubles.

“Wow! This was a great tennis meet all around,” Esky coach Chris Ogren said. “As I was putting my four-year-old to bed (last night), I told her that we tied with Marquette today. She responded, ‘you could say you both won,’ and honestly, that’s how it felt. Just about every girl on our team played their most competitive match of the year today. Three of the matches were able to go to three sets, and there wasn’t a single blowout anywhere.”

On the doubles side, Delaney McIntyre and Natalie Williams went to three sets for an Escanaba win against Payton Pleugh and Payton Bullock.

“Natalie Williams and Delaney McIntyre … played their best tennis so far this year,” Ogren said. “They were up 4-1 in the second set before Marquette ran off five straight games to win the second set. Our team remained calm, though, and was able to put together a great 6-0 set to finish the match. Both girls served well, played the net well and just played all-around strong tennis today,”

The Eskymos other win in doubles came from Leslie Purcell and Sam Manninen at No. 2 — also a three-set match.

“Sam Manninen and Leslie Purcell also put together a really nice three-set win at No. 2 doubles,” Ogren said. “After earning a close first set, they fell off a bit in the second … They also really rallied well in the third and started placing the ball in the right spots. Once they figured out the right strategy to play, they really hit a groove and looked like a much different team.”

At No. 1 and No. 2, Sophia Derkos and Sonya Maki finished with Esky’s two wins in singles.

“… I was very pleased to see that (Maki) bounced back after a tough loss yesterday and was able to beat a solid opponent in straight sets,” Ogren said. “Sonya has just been getting a little better every time she plays, and I’m really excited to see how good she can get by the end of the season.”

Escanaba hosts West Iron County Wednesday.
