Gladstone’s Hughes cruises to Firecracker run win | News, Sports, Jobs

GLADSTONE — It was a pretty relaxing run for Drew Hughes here Monday as he cruised to victory in the Firecracker five-mile run.

The soon-to-be Gladstone High School senior was clocked at 28 minutes, 25.9 seconds. He was followed by Jake Strasler of Gladstone (30:59.4) and Collin Fayas of DePere, Wis. (31:07.5).

“The (MISH) marathon took a lot out of me,” said Hughes, who placed sixth overall in the 26.2-mile race in three hours, 35 minutes, 56.8 seconds on June 25. “I was four seconds slower than I was last year, but I’m very happy with how it went. It was nice to have the cloud cover for the first 2 1/2 miles. Then the sun came out, but I felt good today. I was using this as a hard workout. This is a good conditioner for cross country.”

Amanda Jasso of Escanaba was crowned women’s champion in 35:30.1. She was followed by former Garden resident Brittany Jurek (36:09.3) and Jessica Kelly of Gladstone (36:24.2).

“I did the (MISH) half-marathon last week but got plenty of rest in between,” said Jasso. “It wasn’t too bad. I’m very happy with my time. I wanted to settle into a steady pace and pretty much held it all the time. It was a little more muggy than I thought it would be. Then, we had a little breeze coming off the bay, and that helped.”

Emersyn Comstock of Sun Prairie won the kids’ one-mile race in 7:53.2, followed by Cohen Gerard of Rockford, Mich. (8:42.2) and Chase Cannon of East Jordan, Mich. (8:47).

Elyse Gerlikowski was the girls’ winner (8:57.1), followed by Quinn Schupp of Madison, Wis. (9:49.4) and Emily Spreitzer (9:55.3).

The races, which drew approximately 165 runners, were run under partly sunny and humid conditions with temperatures in the mid-60s.
