Heathrow and Gatwick: Latest Foreign Office Covid travel advice for USA, Canada and Mexico

For many people, life has returned to ‘normal’ now that many of the Covid rules that dictated our lives for the past two years have been lifted. The UK government has even lifted all rules and restrictions for travellers entering England.

Travellers arriving in the country no longer need to complete a passenger locator form, take any Covid tests before or after arrival, nor do they need to quarantine. This applies whether they are vaccinated or not.

However, other countries do still have a number of Covid rules and restrictions in place for passengers, such as testing and quarantining. Passengers should be aware of the rules at their country of destination when travelling abroad. Take a look at the latest Covid rules for passengers travelling to the USA, Canada and Mexico.

USA has opened its borders to vaccinated travellers

The USA closed its borders for much of the pandemic, but has now reopened to allow travellers to enter the country. Passengers can enter the USA if they’re fully vaccinated with an approved vaccine.

Before boarding a flight to the USA, most passengers – regardless of vaccination status – are required to show a negative Covid test result taken no more than one day before travel. All air passengers are also required to provide contact information to their airlines before boarding.

Upon arrival, fully vaccinated travellers do not have to quarantine, but are recommended to take a viral test within three to five days of arrival in the US.

Unvaccinated travellers are not allowed to enter the country, unless they have an exception or are US Citizens, US Nationals, or US Lawful Permanent Residents.

Canada

Canada has different rules for vaccinated and unvaccinated travellers

Fully vaccinated passengers can enter Canada for any reason, such as tourism. Travellers must follow the different rules in place such as providing a pre-arrival Covid test taken no more than 72 hours before their scheduled flight.

Travellers must also have no Covid symptoms and submit mandatory information via ArriveCAN, including proof of vaccination in English or French and a quarantine plan in case they do not meet the necessary requirements at the border.

Foreign nationals who don’t qualify as fully vaccinated will only be allowed to enter in specific circumstances. Those who meet certain exceptions and are able to enter despite being unvaccinated will need to quarantine for 14 days.

Mexico

Mexico has no quarantine or testing requirements

Mexico has relaxed its Covid rules for travellers. Upon arrival in Mexico, travellers will be asked to fill out a Health Questionnaire. This document is available in Spanish and English.

The land border between Mexico and the US is now open for travellers going to the US who have been vaccinated with WHO approved vaccines. The closure will still be in effect for non-vaccinated travellers and applies primarily to tourism and recreational travel.
