This week’s MVP belongs to London-based rapper Loyle Carner, who today released his third studio album, hugo. In what is his most ambitious record to date, the rapper showcases his versatility alongside a helping of poignant lyricism. Throughout the 10-track project, Carner effortlessly goes from glossy neo-soul to thumping boom-bap hip hop, tackling everything from strained relationships, to identity and race. ‘Blood on my Nikes’ offers us a haunting glimpse of a murder Carner witnessed while still a teenager and its gloomy storytelling and accompanying horns make it one of many standouts on the album. This is Carner’s most polished record to date and yet another fantastic addition to an already impressive discography.
