NASCAR at Nashville live race updates, results, highlights from Ally 400

Denny Hamlin is in prime position to win his third race of the 2022 Cup Series — more than any other driver on the circuit 17 races into the season.

Hamlin took the pole ahead of this weekend’s Ally 400 race at Nashville Superspeedway. The last time he took the pole, he won the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte. Will history repeat Sunday?

Sunday’s race is the first after a week layoff in the Cup Series. Time will tell whether the time off is good or bad for the racers, but there should be plenty of excellent racing on the 1.33-mile oval.

The Ally 400 will take 300 laps — the equivalent of 399 miles — to complete. The race will consists of three stages, of 90, 95 and 115 laps, respectively. Kyle Larson is the defending race champion; NASCAR returned to Nashville in 2021 following a 10-year absence.

NASCAR at Nashville live updates, highlights from Ally 400

All times Eastern.

9:32 p.m.:

8:56 p.m.: Programming note. The trucks are on the track attempting to dry it. The minimum amount of time it will take to get the cars back on the track is an hour-and-a-half — roughly 10:30 p.m. ET. At that point, the broadcast will resume on USA Network (Nashville has lights). If the race is postponed, it will resume tomorrow at noon ET.

7:52 p.m.: Red flag, Lap 139. There’s another lightning strike, mandating another 30-minute delay in the race. With 15 more laps, the race hits the halfway point — any weather delays beyond that point will make the results final.

7:45 p.m.: A blunder by Bubba Wallace’s pit crew costs him a good run. He’s now in 30th place and a lap down from the lead lap. Tyler Reddick was the driver to hit him.

7:43 p.m.: NASCAR’s bet pays off. The rain passes and the cars are back out on the track.

7:39 p.m.: A story in two tweets.

7:36 p.m.: NASCAR appearing to hope this rain doesn’t get worse and instead passes quickly. Cars are hitting pit row.

7:34 p.m.: Caution 5, Lap 118. Rain on the track at Nashville. Here’s the top 10 for the time being:

  1. Martin Truex Jr.
  2. Ryan Blaney
  3. Kyle Busch
  4. Christopher Bell
  5. Kevin Harvick
  6. Bubba Wallace
  7. Chase Elliott
  8. Denny Hamlin
  9. Joey Logano
  10. Daniel Suarez

7:23 p.m.: They’re back at it on Lap 97. Truex takes the lead over after a short lead by Joey Logano.

7:16 p.m.: Caution 4, Lap 91. The yellow flag waves after the top 10 finishers cross the finish line.

7:15 p.m.: Hamlin makes a great run on Truex, but here’s the top 10 finishers for Stage 1:

  1. Martin Truex Jr.
  2. Denny Hammlin
  3. Ryan Blaney
  4. Chris Bell
  5. Kevin Harvick
  6. Lyle Larson
  7. Bubba Wallace
  8. Chase Elliott
  9. Kyle Busch
  10. Kurt Busch

7:02 p.m.: Martin Truex Jr. overtakes Hamlin in the top spot for the first time this race on the restart (Lap 67).

6:56 p.m.: Caution 3, Lap 61. Chastain bumps Chase Briscoe from behind and causes him to make contact with Ty Dillon. The latter two are the ones involved in the crash, but both are able to drive off.

6:53 p.m.: Back to green flag. Let’s see if we can get out of this stage without another delay.

6:52 p.m.: All in all, not a great restart for Team Hendrick.

6:51 p.m.: Byron’s giving an interview in the garage saying his car’s steering is shot — an issue he first experienced before the red flag.

6:45 p.m.: Caution 2, Lap 50. And there’s our second crash — Alex Bowman is involved, and his right front tire is tearing the fender off as he heads to the pit. NBC crew trying to figure out what happened.

6:44 p.m.: William Byron’s car is giving him trouble. He’s heading to the garage after bumping with Chase Elliott.

6:44 p.m.: And we’re back to green flag conditions! The cars immediately get three wide with Hamlin — who has led every lap this race — still at the front.

6:36 p.m.: The red flag conditions are lifted! Back to yellow (which was the result of Bilicki, not the weather).

6:21 p.m.: A funny interview with Ross Chastain before the cars get back out on the track.

5:58 p.m.: Fans at Nashville have been asked to gather their items and clear the grandstands. No known delay to race resumption.

5:33 p.m.: Red flag. A lightning strike within seven miles of the track forces a mandatory 30-minute delay. Worth noting that Nashville has lights, so any delay will not necessarily move the race to tomorrow.

5:31 p.m.: Caution 1, Lap 42: Josh Bilicki is forced down into the lower circle with some car issues, allowing some teams to get back into the pits and make some adjustments. Whatever was ailing Bilicki’s car seems to have resolved itself, however.

5:25 p.m.: Nice maneuvering from Kyle Busch, who moves from 36th at the start of the race to 15th just 29 laps into Nashville.

5:14 p.m.: Martin Truex Jr. is complaining of “greasy” front tires at Nashville. Bears watching seven laps into this race.

5:11 p.m.: There’s the green flag! The 2022 Ally 400 is underway.
