The three Luxembourgish representatives who recently participated in the annual Luxembourg Fest in Wisconsin have put out statements to ensure that their travels were not paid for by taxpayer money.
Last week, Minister of Finance Yuriko Backes and MP Sven Clement from the Pirate Party travelled to Belgium, a town in the US state of Wisconsin, where the descendants of Luxembourgish immigrants annually celebrate the Luxembourg Fest. Both politicians were further joined by Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich, who also participated in the local parade.
After news of the politicians’ trip had made rounds on social media, some people alleged that it must have been paid for with taxpayer money.
The Ministry of Finance has now reacted to the allegations and ensured that Minister Backes travelled to the United States with her family and therefore paid for the trip herself. Similarly, MP Clement has put out a statement to indicate that he and his relatives paid for the trip themselves.
Cardinal Hollerich, who further travelled to 20 other communities in the States, also announced that his trip was not financed with taxpayer money.
