DALLAS – No. 61 Senior Stijn Slump was named Feb. 16 Conference USA Athlete of the Week after taking down No. 71 Ryan Fishback of Virginia Tech last weekend. He followed that performance by clinching the match on the top court against Indiana to give Middle Tennessee a 4-0 road sweep.
With the honor, Slump becomes the third Blue Raider to win the award this season. His teammates Rocha (Feb. 9) and Brostrom Poulsen (Jan. 26) were named C-USA Athlete of the Week prior.
Stijn played a crucial role in last weekend’s matches, he finished 2-0 on singles court No. 1 including a ranked win. On the doubles front, won 6-2 paired with his parter Motl helping MT obtain the needed doubles point over IU.
The Havelte, Netherlands native sits at 6-3 on the top Blue Raider singles court this season, two of those three losses came to individuals ranked in the top 25 of the ITA rankings, the other loss was dealt by a power 5 opponent.
In doubles, Slump moved to 5-3 on the season with a 6-2 win over Indiana’s Mac Rogers and Patrick Fletchall.
Middle Tennessee returns to action this weekend and will host unbeaten Auburn (8-0) on Friday, Feb. 18 at 5:00 p.m. inside the Adams Tennis Complex. Two days later, the team will travel to East Lansing, Mich. to face off with Michigan State (7-2) in a true-road match.
