Study shows 40% of Americans give up on New Year’s resolutions

HAMPTON, N.H. (WFXR) — It’s been 41 days since millions made their New Year’s resolutions to help better themselves, but according to a study from Planet Fitness — 40 percent of Americans give up on their resolutions — stating they aren’t motivated anymore.

Planet Fitness also showed in its study that 29 percent got bored with the process of sticking to it and 28 percent had difficulty keeping up with the changes needed to achieve their resolutions.

“Sticking with New Year’s resolutions can be overwhelming, especially with of all the challenges we’ve been through recently. The good news is that it’s never too late to keep momentum going and reset your goals for this year and beyond,” said Teddy Savage, head of health and fitness excellence at Planet Fitness.

On the flip side of the study, 91 percent tied their resolutions to a fitness goal. Americans stated their motivations included 66 percent wanting to be healthier, 51 percent wanting to feel better about themselves, and 48 percent to look better.

Savage says there are ways to get over the 41-day resolution slump, with Resolution Reset Day.

  • Rethink your exercise routine
  • Ease back into a routine
  • Stretch to maximize any workout and make sure muscles and joints stay safe from injury
  • Engage with people
