Three Niners Named to C-USA All-Academic Team

DALLAS– On Wednesday, Conference USA named three members of Charlotte’s Cross Country team to it’s All-Academic team. Sophia Ritter was named to the women’s all-academic team, while Zachary Beale and Brian Picone were named to the men’s all-academic team. This is the first time for each runner that they have been named to the C-USA Cross Country All-Academic Team.

Sophia Ritter, Sophomore

The Earth & Environmental Sciences major boasts an impressive 4.0 GPA in her time at Charlotte. Ritter has twice been named to the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll (2021 & 2022). Ritter has been named to the Perfect 49ers List three straight times (Spring 2021, Fall 2021, Spring 2022).

Ritter was the top finisher for the women’s team at the 2022 C-USA Cross Country Championships and helped lead the team to its first conference title since 2017. Ritter’s time of 21:18 at the C-USA Championships tied Hana Sutchar for the eighth fastest 6K time in Charlotte women’s history. At the Joe Piane ND Invitational, Ritter set a time of 17:08, which is the fifth fastest 5K time in Charlotte women’s history.

Zachary Beale, Junior

Majoring in Operations & Supply Chain Management, Beale carries a 4.0 GPA. Earlier this year, Beale was named to the 2022 C-USA Track & Field All-Academic team. Beale has also been a recipient of a C-USA All-Academic medal, which he received in 2020. Beale was named to the Fall 2021 Perfect 49er List and twice named to the Chancellor’s List (Spring 2021 & Spring 2022).

Beale finished in 12th place at the Firetower Project in the 8K race. Set a personal best time in the 8K of 25:14.0 at the Joe Piane ND Invitational on his way to a 39th place finish. Beale also finished in 35th place at the Charlotte Opener.

Brian Picone, Redshirt Sophomore

While majoring in Marketing, Picone has achieved a 3.69 GPA in his time at Charlotte. Has been named to the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll twice in his career (2021 & 2022). Picone has been named to the Chancellor’s List (Fall 2021) and twice named to the Dean’s List (Spring 2021 & Fall 2021).

Picone finished 13th at the 2022 C-USA Championships and was named Second Team All-Conference, while helping the men’s team to its first conference championship since 2020. Picone also finished 19th place at the Charlotte Opener in the 5K. Picone’s 35th place finish at the Panorama Farms XC23 Invitational helped the men’s team finish fourth overall at the competition.
