Tops Travel to Texas for C-USA Outdoor Championships

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU Track & Field has reached the end of its season and is headed to the Conference USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by UTSA to wrap up the year. The championships begin on Thursday and end on Sunday with the Hilltoppers starting their events on Friday afternoon.

WKU is coming into the championships off one of its strongest overall performances this season at the Outdoor Music City Challenge. The Hilltoppers earned 16 new PR’s across the board while winning three events and recording 11 top-five finishes.
 
A number of Hilltoppers have top marks amongst the league heading into the weekend. Dedrick Troxell has the fifth-fastest 1500-meter time and Savannah Heckman is fourth in the 5k. Katie Isenbarger has the second-best high jump mark followed by Grace Turner in fifth. In women’s hammer throw, Aitana Safont Falomir has the third-best mark just ahead of Ajla Basic by four inches.
 
Action on Friday starts with the men’s hammer throw at 2 p.m. CT. The women’s event will follow at 4:30 p.m. The only event run on the track on Friday night is the men’s and women’s 10k featuring WKU’s own Will Perrone and Heckman. The races will start at 8 and 9 p.m., respectively.
 
Saturday is filled with a bit more action with Samyzia Sears starting WKU’s competition in the women’s long jump at 1 p.m. CT. The team will also compete in women’s discus and men’s pole vault starting at 3:30 p.m. in the field. Action on the track begins at 5:30 p.m. with the men’s and women’s 1500-meter races.
 
The prelims of the 1500, 110/100-meter hurdles, 400, 100, 800, 400-meter hurdles and 200 will run between 5:30 and 8:40 p.m. The day will end with the men’s and women’s steeplechase starting at 9 p.m.
 
On Sunday, Abigail Green and Cedric Johnson will kickstart the Hilltoppers’ day at 1 p.m. in the women’s javelin and men’s triple jump, respectively. WKU will have competitors in women’s pole vault and shot put at 3:30 p.m., ending the field day with women’s high jump at 5:30 p.m.
 
The track will heat up with the 4×100-meter relays at 6 p.m., followed by the finals races of every event that ran preliminaries on Saturday. The championships will conclude with the men’s and women’s 5k and the 4×400-meter relays at approximately 9 p.m.
