USFL Week 5 scores, updates: Pittsburgh Maulers seek first win as they battle Houston Gamblers

The USFL’s regular season will be half over after this weekend and we’re starting to see who could be legitimate threats to capture the title in the first year of the reborn league.

On Friday night, the preseason favorite Tampa Bay Bandits surged above .500 with a win over the Michigan Panthers. On Saturday, two of the league’s top quarterbacks in New Jersey’s De’Andre Johnson and New Orleans’ Kyle Sloter were on display. Johnson’s two first half touchdown runs and 252 all-purpose yards keyed the Generals to their fourth straight win.

In the first of a Sunday doubleheader, the Stallions remained perfect on the season after rallying to defeat Philadelphia. Birmingham quarterback J’Mar Smith was surgical, completing 77.3% of his passes while the defense shut the Stars out for the entirety of the second half. To cap off this week’s action, the Pittsburgh Maulers will be looking for their first win of the year when they face the Houston Gamblers (4 p.m. ET on FOX, stream for free on fuboTV).
