What time is Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez vs. Julio Cesar Martinez today? Schedule, channel, main card start time for 2022 boxing fight

Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez will be looking to secure another shot at Juan Francisco Estrada when he faces off against WBC flyweight champion Julio Cesar Martinez on Saturday at Pechanga Arena in San Diego. Can Martinez pull off the upset? Will he even make weight for the fight?

Gonzalez, a former WBA light flyweight, WBC flyweight and WBC super flyweight champion, made his pro debut in 2005. He beat Kal Yafai to win the WBA super flyweight title. He successfully defended the belt once but then lost it to WBC and The Ring super flyweight champion Estrada. That was a rematch of their 2012 fight, which Gonzalez (50-3, 41 KOs) won.

The rematch was a Fight of the Year contender, with a record 2,529 punches thrown. The two were supposed to compete in a trilogy fight, but Estrada had to withdraw.

Martinez made his pro debut in 2015. He lost his first fight but hasn’t lost since, pushing his career record to 18-1 (one no-contest, 14 KOs). His last fight was a no-contest against McWilliams Arroyo in November after Arroyo couldn’t continue following a head clash.

Martinez missed weight during weigh-ins, tipping the scales at 116.4 pounds, or 1.4 pounds over the 115-pound limit for which he signed. Per Boxing Scene, Martinez cannot weigh more than 15 percent over the contracted limit when he weighs in again Saturday morning, or else the fight will be nixed.
