Austria head coach Franco Foda will leave his position after the nation’s friendly with Scotland on Tuesday after failing to lead his side to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Foda announced his decision at a press conference on Monday, following Austria’s 2-1 defeat by Wales in the UEFA qualification playoffs last week.
Foda said: “I’ve had a lot of thoughts over the past few days and I take full responsibility for the fact that we didn’t qualify for the World Cup.
“So my job as team manager ends after the Scotland game.”
“My successor can look forward to a team with impeccable character that has a lot of potential for development. I am convinced that we will have a lot of fun with the national team in the years to come.”
Foda, the former Sturm Graz head coach, was hired by Austria at the end of 2017.
